Although our current way of life is filled with many a tragedy, the lockdown period is a good opportunity for us to really tend to our own gardens.
Self isolation, for some has not been the meme-worthy experience we’ve all seen on social media. It has been an onslaught of brutal experiences that won’t be forgotten any time soon. From losing loved ones, lack of job security and a restriction on freedoms- feelings of anxiety and depression are at an all time high. Which is why self care, evaluation and reflection are things that should not be ignored.
Suddenly, feelings and thoughts we would normally disregard are being brought to the forefront. And the absence of ready distractions or endless link-ups, indicate that its really time to face your front! (Or feelings/emotions). This doesn’t have to be an unpleasant experience, taking valuable time out for self Introspection is necessary. Understanding and solidifying the relationship that you have with yourself is a beautiful thing.
Introspection is the examination of one’s mental and emotional process. A concept that not only relies on your ability to assess and observe, but also be honest with yourself. Much like the spiritual relationship you have with God, this is something that is very personal to you. A large part of my time in lockdown has been spent journaling. This is something I’ve done for as long as I can remember, only that I’ve graduated from documenting the fleeting interactions had with my crush, to having an open dialogue, that allows me to check in on myself from time to time.
Journaling is a good way to keep track of all areas of your life, good or bad. It’s an effective way of strengthening your inner voice, while easing your mind of the burdens carried on the day to day basis. The act of transforming busy thoughts in to written form, holds its own kind of sacred power.
It’s a rare occurrence that we have been forced to be this still and present in our own lives. As much as we complain, I definitely feel it has been necessary. Now is the time to weed out any negative thoughts which have been borrowed externally. For growth to take place in this period, it is essential to prioritise yourself. Take advantage of this free time, once this is all over – life will surely be coming fast!
